Project title: Understanding and improving mobile user experience

Supervisor name: Prof. Jörg Ott or someone with the same level of experience and/or expertise.

PhD enrolment: Y

Objectives: This task aims at connecting objective measurements to user experience. This task will:

  1. Provide novel measurement and evaluation methods, as well as develop and extend tools to support data collection
  2. Carry out measurements using existing (own) measurement infrastructure and complement those as needed
  3. Evaluate the results.

Tasks and methodology:

  • Define metrics suitable to represent user experience and, using user studies, we will bridge user perception and measurable network performance metrics.
  • Use active measurement results to assess user experience under different conditions to infer QoE metrics and devise ideas for improving protocol and service design.
  • Identify objectively measureable network parameters closely related to QoE.

Results: The results aim at connecting objective measurements to user experience. A set of metrics suitable to represent user experience and, using user studies will be defined. Those metrics will bridge user perception and measurable network performance metrics.
This task will contribute to novel measurement and evaluation methods which would be carried out in cooperation with Ericsson.
Part of this task will be to evaluate the results in QoE.

Dissemination: 1 to 2 publications per year to either conferences, magazine or journals

Planned secondment: Ericsson (3 months) to gain insights on user experience impact factor, e.g., for web-based real-time communication, TID (3 months) to gain insight into Internet traffic and performance issues from an operator perspective, possibly with access to internal measurement data.
