The 5G-TRANSFORMER 5GPPP project defines an SDN/NFV-based architecture using network slicing, multi-access edge computing (MEC) and federation as key concepts to meet vertical industries’ (eHealth, automotive, industry 4.0 and media) requirements in 5G mobile networks.

5G-TRANSFORMER is presented at MWC’18 in the booth of 5G IA (Hall7, Booth K17) and the booth of 4 project partners.
Barcelona, February 26, 2018 ̶ 5G-TRANSFORMER presents its latest results on future 5G mobile transport networks at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. The aim of the 5G-TRANSFORMER architecture is to apply SDN/NFV techniques to transform current rigid mobile transport networks into the 5G dynamic mobile transport network managing networking and computing resources tailored to the specific needs of vertical industries, such as eHealth, automotive, media, and industry 4.0. In addition to SDN/NFV, network slicing, multi-access edge computing (MEC) and federation concepts are seen as key enablers to allow such transformation. 5G-TRANSFORMER defines three main architectural building blocks, which are: the Vertical Slicer (VS), for supporting the creation and management of slices to verticals; the Service Orchestrator (SO), for end-to-end service orchestration and federation of resources from multiple domains, and the Mobile Transport and Computing Platform (MTP), acting as the underlying fronthaul and backhaul transport network.
5G-TRANSFORMER is well represented at MWC’18, since it is presented at the 5G IA booth (Hall 7, booth K17) and in the booths of several project partners, namely InterDigital (Hall 7, Booth C61), b<>com (Hall7, Booth H12), Mirantis (Hall 2, Meeting Room A39), and CTTC (CS20, Booth 34). A demonstration of the 5G-TRANSFORMER mobile transport platform inheriting 5G-Crosshaul concepts is presented at the CTTC booth. In particular, it is shown how, with open APIs, it is possible to dynamically create end-to-end network paths in the order of seconds, as opposed to today’s network operators´ practice, which is in the order of days.
5G-TRANSFORMER (/5g-transformer/) is a H2020 5G-PPP phase-2 project, leveraging on the solutions developed in H2020 5G-PPP phase-1 projects, such as 5G-Crosshaul and 5GEx. 5G-TRANSFORMER is a 30-month research and innovation action and received EU funding of 7.9M€. It is carried out by a consortium of 18 partners, including vertical industries, manufacturers, network operators, service providers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), research centers and universities. The different skills and perspectives provided by the variety of partners ensure an effective design of such architecture for 5G mobile networks. Topics dealt with in the project cover directly or indirectly all eight core themes of MWC’18.
