A €50M EU sponsored 5G programme gives 5GTONIC a key role

It will be an approach for three projects -5G EVE, 5G-VINNI and 5GGENESIS- to improve the evolution of the vertical market uptake of 5G innvation

A vital role in three high-profile EU-sponsored 5G development projects has been awarded  to the 5TONIC 5G co-creation laboratory in Madrid, together with some of its member companies. The awards cement the laboratory’s position as one of Europe’s foremost 5G digital innovation centers.

The three projects are designed to help innovate and test 5G vertical market applications and services in the end-to-end environment that is a key feature of the 5TONIC facility. The projects will run for three years and were selected by the EU from a total of 16 proposals it received from facilities all over Europe.

The 5TONIC laboratory will be a center for the 5G EVE, 5G-VINNI and 5GENESIS projects, which form part of the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme.  Together they comprise a three-part €50m initiative driven by the Commission’s 5G PPP organisation, and will also attract an investment commitment by the ICT industry of several times that amount.

The three chosen projects are:

The 5TONIC facility was co-founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute. Both of the co-founders will be closely involved with the new projects, working alongside other 5TONIC member companies including Ericsson and UC3M. Telefónica is the only European Telco that is participating in all three EU projects. Ericsson is also involved in all three, while UC3M is the only European university that is taking part in two of the three projects.
