5G-Crosshaul present at MWC2016 – CTTC Demo

“Hierarchical SDN Orchestration of Wireless and Optical Networks”

The CTTC demo proposes the hierarchical SDN Orchestration of multi-technology multi-domain heterogeneous wireless/optical emulated networks. A hierarchical SDN orchestrator is proposed to provision End-to-End (E2E) connectivity through different network segments. The hierarchical approach allows scalability, modularity and more security.

“EdgeHaul Millimeter Wave Gigabit Transport featuring a Telepresence 5G Application”

InterDigital (IDCC) presented its 5G millimeter wave technologies, including EdgeHaul – a platform for 60GHz Transport. EdgeHaul is a solution for gigabit connectivity for today’s applications such as small cell backhaul, residential broadband, and carrier WiFi cable extension. But it’s also a development platform for the emerging 5G challenges that will demand low latency and multi-gigabit dense networking. To highlight the need to low-latency / high datarate Transport, we will demonstrate a wireless telepresence connection utilizing EdgeHaul. EdgeHaul’s software is built with an SDN framework making it suitable for flexible configurations for network slicing and multi-tenant support. The platform is planned to be extended to support multiplexed fronthaul traffic, and integrated with the 5G-Crosshaul technologies in the near future.

5G-PPP Media & Analyst Event at Mobile World Congress 2016

The European Commission and the 5G Infrastructure Association have the pleasure to report on the media and industry analyst briefing on the launch of the 5G PPP White Paper “5G Empowering Verticals” at Mobile World Congress 2016.

5G network infrastructures will be a key asset to support the digitalization of economic and societal processes, leading to the fourth industrial revolution impacting multiple vertical sectors. The 5G PPP White paper on empowering verticals depicts innovative digital use cases from most important vertical sectors and how requirements from verticals impact 5G design. It also presents how 5G will open the field to new business value propositions by cementing strong relationships between vendors, operators and verticals. Deploying 5G for vertical markets in Europe by 2020 (the earliest date currently contemplated by the industry) should be a common framing objective.

During the event, Mr. Günther H. Oettinger, European Commissioner, Digital Economy and Society, and executives from global top technology companies discussed the impact of 5G on digital society and digital economy, as well as requirements from vertical industries, business models, architectures and standardization aspects of 5G.

Panelists:
Moderator Mr Philippe Defraigne, Cullen International
Mr Günther H. Oettinger, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society
Mr Ulf Ewaldsson, Chief Technology Officer, Ericsson
Mr Hermann Meyer, Chief Executive Officer, ERTICO – ITS Europe

Demo: “Hierarchical SDN Orchestration of Wireless and Optical Networks”

Booth: Hall Congress Square Stand CS50

The CTTC demo proposes the hierarchical SDN Orchestration of multi-technology multi-domain heterogeneous wireless/optical emulated networks. A hierarchical SDN orchestrator is proposed to provision End-to-End (E2E) connectivity through different network segments. The hierarchical approach allows scalability, modularity and more security.
The demo will consist of two emulated network segments: Wireless and Transport Network Segments. The Transport Network Segment will include two Ethernet and an optical domain. An E2E service request will be processed by the proposed SDN Orchestrator in order to establish the necessary domain connections. Network Topology will be obtained at the different abstraction levels. The benefits of hierarchical SDN orchestration become clear in the scope of future 5G networks with technology heterogeneity.

Wireless Transport SDN Proof of Concept

The PoC was held in October, 2015, in Madrid, Spain. Telefonica and IMDEA Networks as a 5TONIC (www.5tonic.org) activity, hosted together the PoC. Six vendors (in alphabetical order) namely Ceragon, Coriant, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC and SIAE participated in the tests, providing a variety of types of equipment and software consistent with the SDN architecture, leveraging ONOS as controller, and with the support of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
The PoC has shown the implementation of the OpenFlow wireless transport extension defined in the context of ONF by wireless transport project under OTWG. It has been demonstrated the interoperability among five wireless transport vendor products and a switch product, implementing the same extensions, in an open environment with an ONOS based controller.
The demonstrated applications have shown how programmability at the network level and on top of the SDN Controller for managing a wireless transport network can provide a significant contribution to network OPEX reduction.
